A Hospice Patient’s Joyful Response to Surprise Meal
Being part of the home hospice care team has helped us understand the importance of cherishing our time with each patient.
Despite the demands of caring for multiple individuals, we recognise the profound impact we can have on them and their families, even in the short time we spend together.
During one of our visits, we had the opportunity to see Mr Tuam Kok Wah, a resident at Charis Manor Nursing Home. The nurses informed us of his diminishing appetite, which set him apart from his friends who would gather for meals.
When we asked about Mr Tuam’s food preferences and cravings, he expressed his desire for dishes like cockles, char kway teow, pig trotters, and durian. We assured him that we would bring these foods during our next visit, hoping to bring him some comfort and joy.
The following week, we arrived during lunchtime and discovered Mr. Tuam fully engrossed in his favorite mukbang show on YouTube. With excitement, we shared that we had brought his beloved foods—pig trotters and durian. In an instant, his face illuminated with sheer delight.
Seeing him relish the meal with genuine enthusiasm moved us to tears. He repeatedly expressed his gratitude for bringing his favourite foods and even mentioned that the pig trotters evoked memories of his wife’s cooking.
These experiences remind us of the significance of our role as nurses. They show that our actions, no matter how brief our time together may be, can positively impact the lives of those we care for.
