Meet 50-year-old Irene Chua. She has a family history of cancer, with 4 uncles, an aunt, and a cousin who passed away due to the disease. She herself was also diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer.
Irene also has a history of getting stomach ulcers. She went for a colonoscopy and the report showed that she had a fibroid in between her stomach and intestine. She decided to take the Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT). She did so as a preventative measure to screen for colorectal cancer.
Irene learnt about the FIT Kit when she volunteered for Singapore Cancer Society (SCS), distributing the FIT kit to the public during event*. During the volunteer brief she got more information about the FIT Kit and decided it was important for her to do the test as well. She knew that due to her age she is at a higher risk of colorectal cancer.
She encourages people to go through screening services even if they have are a cancer survivor. She added, “It’s a safe test and a very easy one to do. If you are 50 and above, pick up your FIT kit at the following locations and get screened today. If you detect early, you can save your life. Treatment will be more effective and medical fees may not be so costly.”
