In 2002, Tricia was operated on to remove a large lump from her ovary after she experienced lower abdominal pains. A biopsy revealed that she had stage 3 ovarian cancer and she underwent chemotherapy as part of her treatment.
With the support of her parents and family, Tricia recovered and became a woman on a mission.
She joined the grassroots organisation and organised cancer screening for her constituents. During a community event, she called in the Mobile Mammography Bus, which resulted in a positive detection of cancer in one constituent, who was diagnosed with stage one breast cancer and was promptly treated. Tricia still keeps in touch with her to ensure she gets supported on her road to recovery. Tricia’s own sisters are proactively getting screened on an annual basis.
Not many are as fortunate as Tricia to have a supportive environment for recovery. To assist cancer patients, SCS works with family members and caregivers to support their recovery. Welfare funding is also available to those who need financial assistance. In addition, SCS also provides various cancer screening programmes for Singaporeans and Permanent Residents.
Tricia’s advice is simple, “Go for screening, do not wait until something happen.”
