Singapore, 31 October 2018: Over $450,000* wasraised through in a Charity Golf & Dinner event that took place on 2 November at the Singapore Island Country Club, in support of Singapore Cancer Society (SCS). Guest-of-Honour Mr Edwin Tong, Senior Minister of State for Ministry of Law & Ministry of Health, graced the event that saw over 280 donors came forward to contribute towards the fight against cancer.
The event was made possible by a group of volunteers who had been impacted by cancer through their own personal experiences.
The Charity Golf fund raising event was mooted by Ms Dora Tuana Tan who has made a $1million donation to Singapore Cancer Society. A symbolic cheque was presented at this event for the establishment of the Endowment Fund for the purpose of supporting the Society with their mission of minimising cancer and maximising lives through effective programmes and services.
Upon visiting SCS Cancer Rehabilitation Centre, Ms Tan was made aware of the many efforts of Singapore Cancer Society in meeting the growing needs of the cancer community, with increasing cancer incidences; recognised the need for more support she rallied her friends, Ms Amberly Woo (who had lost her daughter to cancer) and Ms Angie Gui (breast cancer survivor) to come together and organize the charity golf event to support SCS.
All 36 golf flight packages were snapped up in support of the committee’s efforts to raise funds for the cancer beneficiaries.
SCS is a self-funded voluntary welfare organisation which provides patient care services to needy cancer patients through its welfare, hospice home care, cancer treatment subsidy and rehabilitation support programmes. The Society also provides free cancer screening services and promotes cancer awareness and prevention through its public education and community outreach programmes. Every year, SCS needs to raise at least $20 million to drive their programmes and services.
“With rising cancer incidence, more can be done with stronger support from the community. SCS will be making significant advancements in increasing our capacity and capability to serve those impacted by cancer in the coming years. The tremendous support from the organisers and the participants for this event is a strong testament to our message that no one needs to walk the cancer journey alone,” said Albert Ching, Chief Executive Officer, Singapore Cancer Society.
The funds raised will help beneficiaries like Mdm Irmawati who was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer, when she was 32 weeks pregnant with her second child. SCS is supporting her with funds for her CT scans, blood tests and chemotherapy. Her elder daughter who is in Secondary School also receives aid from SCS Education Financial Assistance Scheme and tuition.
“Thank you for assisting me with Cancer Treatment Fund and financial assistance for my two daughters. I can focus on getting well without worrying about medical costs and my daughters’ education. I am able to remain positive,” shared SCS beneficiary Mdm Irmawati.
The public can also do their part in contributing to this event and empower SCS to give hope and strength to our beneficiaries in their fight against cancer.
